Essential Guide to Sea Trials | FAQ

SEA TRIAL

What is the purpose of a sea trial attendance?

A sea trial is the only opportunity to assess the vessel under real operating conditions — how the engine performs under load, how the boat handles, how systems behave when everything is running at once, and whether there are any noises, vibrations, or characteristics that only appear when the boat is moving.

A static survey cannot replicate this, and a sea trial attended only by the seller or broker does not provide independent observation.

How long does a sea trial typically take?

Usually two to three hours, depending on vessel size and what needs to be assessed.

The focus is on systematic observation of engine performance, steering, system operation, and general behaviour — not an extended sail. For sailing yachts, time under sail is included where conditions allow.

Is a sea trial included in a pre-purchase survey?

Yes. Sea trial attendance is included as standard in a full pre-purchase survey.

The findings are incorporated into the overall survey report.

What if a sea trial wasn't possible at the time of survey?

This happens — the vessel may have been in winter storage, the weather may not have allowed it, or the schedule simply didn't work out.

A standalone sea trial can be arranged separately and a written report issued independently of the main survey.

What are you actually looking for during a sea trial?

Engine start behaviour and warm-up, oil pressure and temperature under load, cooling system performance, propulsion and manoeuvrability, steering response and feel, sail handling systems on sailing yachts, and general noise or vibration characteristics that might indicate wear, misalignment, or mechanical issues.

Any anomalies are noted, discussed, and included in the report.

Can a sea trial be arranged for a vessel I already own?

Yes. A sea trial is not just for buyers. If you have recently had engine work completed, carried out mechanical repairs, or simply want an independent assessment of how the vessel is running, a standalone sea trial provides useful, objective feedback.
